.::. The-Latest.com: 'Get Out Of My Way, Please'

Published December 14 2007

It dawned on me today how there’s something for everyone on Facebook. Just when you think your addiction to that time waster of a social networking site couldn’t get any worse, you discover another mind-blowingly amazing (or terribly useless) application that slows down the loading time of your profile page even more, but increases your notifications significantly. All in good fun eh?

As for myself, I’m developing a love for all the groups on there. Whilst browsing among a few of them the other day, I found one that couldn’t possibly have come along at a better time. It was called ‘I Secretly Want To Punch Slow-Walking People In The Back Of The Head’, and its message was clear: “Either walk faster, or get the fuck off the sidewalk.” That particular day I’d found myself constantly annoyed by the particular matter this group was devoted to. I’ve got nothing against people who don't feel the need to stress around like some of us have to do, but for f…’s sake – do you have to take up all the space on the sidewalk? Do you have to stop in the MIDDLE of the street to talk to someone on your phone, or to have a conversation with that friend you haven’t seen in ages? And, if you have to walk and text someone at the same time – do you honestly have to walk that slow? If you can’t cope with multitasking, I say go have a sit in a café instead or something, as you don’t really seem to be in a hurry to get anywhere.

I’m ok with the daily slow pace on the tube during rush-hour, for instance, as that is pretty much inevitable. Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon is bound to take ages to walk down. But elsewhere, some people just don’t seem to realise that some of us have stressful lives, people to see and places to go to, and we just don’t have time to bop along behind you at your own incredibly slow speed. What’s worse is that most people are totally oblivious to this matter, and they don’t recognise that they’re slowing everybody else down or being very rude. If you decide to gather in a doorway to have a conversation, don’t look at me like I’m a freak when I say “excuse me”. Develop some consideration, please.

The Facebook group now has almost 650,000 members and 36,000 wall post, so I’m not alone in this frustration. Are you getting your daily pace slowed down by slow, inconsiderate people? Please, share your annoyances.
